Plant Common Name
Chinese Fringeflower, Fringe Flower, Loropetalum, Purple-leaved Chinese Fringeflower
General Description
Red leaf Chinese fringeflower is an evergreen shrub native to Japan, China and southeastern Asia. It bears fragrant, many-petaled, spidery pink flowers in late winter and early spring and sporadically at other seasons. The alternate, ovate leaves are leathery, rough on their upper surface, paler underneath. The cultivar ‘Burgundy’ produces new foliage which is red-purple; the older foliage is dark reddish purple to dark olive-green. In zones where semi-evergreen, the foliage may exhibit orange foliage in the fall. This large shrub has an arching, spherical habit.
Loropetalum prefers fertile, moist well-drained soil. Partial shade is best for good growth, though full sun and have shade are tolerated. It is not tolerant of prolonged temperatures well below freezing and in the colder part of the range some winter protection is required to prevent damage. Little pruning is generally required, each year after flowering remove any dead or damaged growth. Loropetalum is susceptible to microelement deficiencies particularly in alkaline soils which can slow growth and cause plants to decline. Use Loropetalum ‘Burgundy’ as screens, boarders, foundation plantings and in naturalistic or woodland gardens.
