Botanical Name
Lupinus 'Gallery Blue'( GALLERY SERIES)
Plant Common Name
Hybrid Lupine
General Description
The intense blue coloring and strong upstanding flower spires of lupine ‘Gallery Blue’ add both a highbrow formal and country casual look to the garden. The individual flowers of this dwarf hybrid are two-tone, each combining iridescent indigo with snow white for a most exciting color contrast. The shorter size of these lupines makes them an excellent choice for fleshing out the front or middle of the perennial border. They also look charming spotted in among flagstone walkways or massed into a formal composition. The ‘Gallery Series’ hybrids were developed from the species Lupinus polyphyllus, a North American native hailing from the Pacific Northwest.
A hallmark of the traditional English cottage garden, hybrid lupines create a strong, vertical statement in the border, and are often seen planted in large groups of mixed colors. Their bold blooms make excellent, sturdy cut flowers.
Most hybrid lupines thrive in light, slightly acidic, well-drained soil. Plant them in a sunny location, but offer protection from direct afternoon sunlight in warmer climates, as they prefer cool temperatures and will suffer in the heat. Lupines develop a fast-growing taproot which can be distorted if the plants are grown in nursery containers for too long. Choose only young seedlings to maximize rooting potential, or start from seed directly in the ground.
