LYCHNIS coronaria 'Alba'

Family

Caryophyllaceae

Botanical Name

LYCHNIS coronaria 'Alba'

Plant Common Name

Rose Campion, White Corn Rose

General Description

Rose campion is a biennial or short-lived perennial native to southeastern Europe. It is grown for its old-fashioned, rounded, flat flowers. The cultivar 'Alba' bears pure white blooms. They appear in late spring to summer on tall branching stems above basal clumps of downy, silver-gray leaves. Seedlings of 'Alba' also have white flowers.

Grow rose campion in full sun to light shade in average, well-drained soil. The leaves — which are most silvery in dry soil and full sun — contrast effectively with darker-leaved plants. Completely remove spent flowering stems to encourage repeat bloom and to keep the plant looking neat. Plant rose campion in groups in the mixed border or cottage garden. It self-sows abundantly.
