Family

Caryophyllaceae

Botanical Name

LYCHNIS flos-cuculi 'Lychjen'(JENNY) PP14139

Plant Common Name

Jenny Ragged Robin, Ragged Robin

General Description

This moisture-loving lychnis, Jenny Ragged Robin ('Lychjen'), bears wispy flowers in late spring and summer that are a soft, lavender-pink. A tufted perennial with basal leaves that sends up tall, slender, leafy flower stems, it is native to the moist meadows of Europe.

The leaves are dark green, but have a blue-green cast. They are slender and oblong and are concentrated near the base of the plant. From late spring to early summer, slender stems rise upward with clusters of pretty flower buds, each green, five-toothed, and purple striped. The lavender-pink flowers look delicate and "ragged" because the petals have four-lobes.

Grow 'Lychjen' in full to partial sun in moist, fertile soil with good drainage. Not tolerant of drought, this perennial is best suited for naturalized drifts in bogs, low pockets in open fields or in roadside ditches where moisture is consistent. There, it will readily reseed itself. It can be grown in an informal mixed border and allowed to intermingle with other perennials and sprout wherever it likes but may become weedy. The airiness of the flowers is magnificent teamed with the wiry texture of short grasses and sedges.
