General Description

Loving moisture and having a humorous name, ragged robin bears frilly flowers in late spring and summer that are pink. A tufted perennial with basal leaves that sends up tall, slender and leaved stems, it is native to the moist meadows of Europe.

The leaves are dark green, but have a blue-green cast. They are slender and oblong and are concentrated near the base of the somewhat spreading stem. From late spring to early summer, slender stems rise upward with clusters of pretty flower buds - each green, five-toothed, and with purple stripes. The flowers range from white to light pink to rose and look delicate as the petals are four-lobed (looking "ragged").

Grow ragged robin in full to partial sun in moist, fertile soils with good drainage. Not tolerant of drought, this perennial is best suited for naturalized drifts in bogs, low pockets in open fields or in roadside ditches where moisture is consistent. It will reseed itself. The airiness of the flowers are magnificent if teamed with the wiry texture of short grasses and sedges.

Cultivar 'Alba' is all-white flowering, and 'Lychjen' (the Jenny ragged robin) has soft lavender-pink blooms.
