LYCHNIS viscaria 'Snowbird'
Snowbird Sticky Catchfly, Sticky Catchfly
With tufts of slender leaves and delicate white blossoms in early summer, this low-growing catchfly, 'Snowbird,' is a lovely alpine beauty. A small clumping perennial with slender, unbranching stems that are sticky to the touch, it is native to Europe and western Asia. The mid-green leaves are long and lance-shaped, and grow mostly at the base of the stems in a tuft. In very mild winter climates, they are partially evergreen. In early summer, tall, dark stems produce airy clusters of white flowers that are salverform in shape (a trumpet-like throat with a flattened array of heart-shaped petals). Butterflies enjoy the flowers.
Grow sticky catchfly in full sun to partial shade in any moist, fertile soil with good drainage. It has sturdy stems and produces lots of flowers, making it a staple in alpine gardend or trough gardens, cottage gardens or sunny borders. Cut spent stems at the base to encourage the growth of new stems and prolong flowering.
