Family

Caryophyllaceae

Botanical Name

LYCHNIS viscaria

Plant Common Name

Sticky Catchfly

General Description

With tufts of slender leaves and pretty, tubular, star-like flowers in early summer, the sticky catchfly is a classic cottage garden favorite. It is a clump-forming perennial with slender, unbranched stems that are sticky to the touch.

This native of Europe and western Asia has a rosette of long, lance-shaped, dark green leaves that are evergreen where winters are mild. In early summer it develops tall, dark stems topped with vibrant pink flowers that are tubular with flaring petals at the mouth. Butterflies enjoy them as do bees.

Grow sticky catchfly in full sun to partial shade and fertile soil with good moisture. It has sturdy stems and produces lots of flowers that are great for cutting, so its great for sunny borders as well as cutting gardens. Many cultivars are available, including the double-flowered 'Splendens Plena', 'Lely' and 'Fontaine'; white-flowered 'Alba', 'Snow' and 'Snowbird' and red-flowered 'Firebird.'
