Family

Primulaceae

Botanical Name

LYSIMACHIA punctata 'Walgoldalex'(GOLDEN ALEXANDER) PP13547

Plant Common Name

Alexander Golden Loosestrife, Yellow Loosestrife

General Description

The variegated yellow loosestrife Golden Alexander has deep green leaves edged in creamy yellow and produces upright leafy stems lined with golden yellow bell-shaped flowers. The leaves tend to remain smooth and undistorted, unlike the other popular variegated yellow loosestrife, 'Alexander.' This exceptional cultivar was bred by Albert Crowther and David Tristram of Arundel, England.

The festive yellow flower spikes are what lure gardeners to yellow loosestrife, but this vigorous perennial can take over garden spaces without regular division and maintenance, though Golden Alexander is less rambunctious. Lysimachia punctata originates from the moist forests and meadows of Eastern Europe and Turkey, so it is well adapted to sites with partial shade.

Yellow loosestrife spreads via rhizomes (underground rooted stems that spread). In late spring or early summer it produces upright, leafy flower stalks with yellow, cup-shaped flowers nestled amid pairs of opposite, deep green leaves edged in yellow. The flowers attract bees and are followed by inconspicuous, brown, five-parted capsules filled with seeds.

Grow yellow loosestrife in full sun to partial shade and fertile, moist, but well-drained soil that does not dry out in summer. It can spread by seed as well as rhizomes, so deadhead it to prevent self-sowing and divide it every two or three years. The flower stems may need staking while in full bloom—particularly if plants are grown in shade. Golden Alexander makes a strong statement in the mixed border. Just be sure it doesn’t crowd out less enthusiastic plants.
