Magnoliaceae
Magnolia x soulangiana 'Alexandrina'
Saucer Magnolia
The most widely planted of the magnolias, saucer magnolia is a broad, spreading, often multi-stemmed tree resulting from the cross between Yulan magnolia and lily magnolia. The voluptuous, purplish-pink, cup-shaped flowers of the cultivar 'Alexandrina' are borne primarily in early spring before the large oval leaves emerge, but also sparsely and sporadically through summer. The smooth, gray bark is attractive year round. It blooms midway through the saucer magnolia season; choose a later-blooming clone for areas prone to damaging late frosts.
Alexandrina saucer magnolia thrives in sun or light shade and slightly acidic, evenly moist soil. Place mulch over the root zone to retain moisture and keep soil cool in summer. Also do not disturb the roots with lawnmower weight or unnecessary foot traffic. It makes a beautiful lawn tree but also excels in groupings or near buildings.
