MAGNOLIA x soulangiana 'Big Pink'
The most widely planted of the magnolias, saucer magnolia is a broad, spreading, often multi-stemmed tree resulting from the cross between Yulan magnolia and lily magnolia. The voluptuous, rosy purple, cup-shaped flowers of the vigorous cultivar 'Big Pink' are borne primarily in spring before the large oval leaves emerge, but also sparsely and sporadically through summer. The smooth, gray bark is attractive year round. It blooms toward the end of the saucer magnolia season, making it a good choice for areas prone to late frosts.
Saucer magnolia thrives in sun or light shade and slightly acidic, evenly moist soil. It makes a beautiful lawn tree but also excels in groupings or near buildings.
