Magnoliaceae
Magnolia x soulangiana 'Lennei'
Saucer Magnolia
The most widely planted of the magnolias, saucer magnolia is a broad, spreading, often multi-stemmed tree resulting from the cross between Yulan magnolia and lily magnolia. The cultivar 'Lennei' bears voluptuous, deep violet, cup-shaped flowers with white interiors in spring before the large oval leaves emerge, with sparse and sporadic rebloom through summer. The smooth gray bark is attractive year round. One of the latest blooming saucer magnolias, it makes a good choice for areas prone to late frosts.
Saucer magnolia thrives in sun or light shade and slightly acidic, evenly moist soil. Mulch around the tree to keep soil moist and cool and to protect the surface roots from damage from lawnmowers. It makes a beautiful lawn tree but also excels in groupings or near buildings.
