MALUS (CENTURION®)

Image of Malus 'Centzam' (CENTURION®)

Jesse Saylor

Family

Rosaceae

Botanical Name

MALUS 'Centzam'(CENTURION®)

Plant Common Name

Centurion® Crabapple, Crabapple, Flowering Crabapple

General Description

A tall tree, upright when young and spreading with age, Centurion® crabapple ('Centzam') is notable for its rose-red flowers, red fruits, good fall color, and resistance to diseases. The large oval leaves emerge reddish, then turn green with bronze tinges until autumn when they turn orange-red. Honeybees pollinate the flowers, producing a heavy crop of small red fruits that mature in late fall and do not persist into winter. Birds are attracted by the fruits.

Plant Centurion in full sun in any moderately fertile, deep, well-drained soil that is moist throughout the growing season. Although this tree has some drought tolerance, its leaves will yellow and drop if it is not watered during prolonged dry periods. It isn't the best choice for cool maritime regions, low deserts or any area with long, humid and wet summers. Centurion® is resistant to the main diseases of crapapples, including fireblight, rust, scab, and powdery mildew. Use this tree as a specimen in a spacious lawn or extended foundation bed, or beside the street.
