MALUS domestica 'Red Baron'

Image of Malus domestica 'Red Baron'

Family

Rosaceae

Botanical Name

MALUS domestica 'Red Baron'

Plant Common Name

Apple, Cooking Apple, Red Baron Apple

General Description

This cultivar, 'Red Baron,' is a medium-sized dessert apple bred in Zone 4 by the University of Minnesota. It is a sweet apple, yellow and red, with juicy flesh and a mild flavor. The fruits mature in late summer and are best eaten fresh because they do not keep well, even in cold storage. This is a small, hardy, deciduous tree that is resistant to fire blight, a damaging bacterial disease most common on young, fast-growing shoots. There is confusion about the name 'Red Baron.' Many nurseries give this name mistakenly to a crabapple cultivar that should be named 'Red Barron'(spelled with two n's). The apples are very different. The 'Red Baron' described here is a dessert apple, while the crabapple bears fruits the size of marbles that are too small for eating.

Like most domestic apples, ‘Red Baron’ grows and fruits best in full sun in average, well-drained soil. Mulch the tree with compost, composted manure, or shredded leaves to enrich the soil, conserve moisture, and encourage moderate growth. Use ‘Red Baron’ in the yard or a foundation planting. For smaller spaces, it should be grafted to a rootstock that controls its size.
