Image of Malus domestica 'Sweet Sixteen'

Family

Rosaceae

Botanical Name

MALUS domestica 'Sweet Sixteen'

Plant Common Name

Apple, Red Eating Apple, Sweet Sixteen Apple

General Description

Bred in Minnesota in Zone 3, ‘Sweet Sixteen’ is a medium-sized dessert apple with very sweet, crisp flesh and an unusual, aromatic flavor. The skin is yellow, lightly striped with red. The fruits mature in mid-autumn, keep well in cold storage, and are good for baking, sauces and eating fresh. This is a medium-sized very hardy, deciduous tree that bears crops dependably every year.

Like most domestic apples, ‘Sweet Sixteen’ grows and fruits best in full sun and average, well-drained soil. Mulch the tree with compost, composted manure, or shredded leaves to enrich the soil and conserve moisture. This tree has some resistance to scab, a leaf disease, and fireblight, a bacterial disease that often starts on young, fast-growing shoots. Use ‘Sweet Sixteen’ in the yard for its spring bloom and fall fruits, or in a foundation planting. For smaller spaces, it should be grafted to a rootstock that controls its size.
