Family

Rosaceae

Botanical Name

MALUS 'Hopa'

Plant Common Name

Crabapple, Flowering Crabapple, Hopa Crabapple

General Description

An old-fashioned crabapple selection, 'Hopa' fills its branches with pink flowers in spring and orange-red fruits in fall. This hybrid deciduous tree has a rounded shape with spreading branches and oval, green leaves that emerge just after the flower buds. In mid-spring, the buds, which are red, arise all along the bare branches and open to pink, fragrant blossoms. Bees pollinate the flowers, providing a crop of large crabapples that mature to bright red by mid to late summer. The fall foliage is mottled yellow, orange and orange-red.

Plant 'Hopa' in full sun in any moderately fertile, deep, well-drained soil that is moist throughout the growing season. Though this tree, like other crabapples tolerates some drought, it needs watering during prolonged dry spells or its leaves will wither and drop. An extended cold period is needed each winter to ensure production of flowers in the springtime. This cultivar suckers (sends up shoots) from the surface roots and is disease-prone, especially to scab. It is most healthy where summer is warm and low in humidity. It is not well-suited to long, humid, wet summers, cool maritime climates, or low deserts. Use it as a specimen lawn tree, a fast-growing street tree, or as an espalier. The early season fruits are good for making jelly.
