Family

Rosaceae

Botanical Name

MALUS 'Indian Magic'

Plant Common Name

Crabapple, Flowering Crabapple, Indian Magic Crabapple

General Description

A perfectly rounded, showy, small tree, 'Indian Magic' covers itself with buds and flowers in spring and glossy fruits in fall. The dark-pink flower buds arise in mid-spring all along the bare branches and open to large, pink, fragrant flowers. Bees pollinate the flowers, producing a heavy, dense crop of glossy, acorn-sized apples that start red, turn bright orange by autumn and then persist decoratively through winter. This hybrid, disease-resistant, deciduous crabapple has oval leaves that emerge red and turn green with red edges and veins, then all green. The leaves appear after the flower buds. In fall, the leaves are green mottled with yellow, orange and orange-red. Birds eat the fruits, often stripping the trees by the middle of winter.

Plant 'Indian Magic' in full sun in any moderately fertile, deep, well-drained soil that is moist throughout the growing season. Like most crabapples, ‘Indian Magic’ tolerates some drought but most be watered during prolonged dry spells or the leaves will wither and drop. It is not well-suited to long, humid, wet summers or low deserts. An extended cold period is needed each winter to ensure production of flowers in the springtime. Use this small tree as a specimen lawn or street tree, to soften the corner of a building in a foundation bed, or trained as an espalier.
