Family

Rosaceae

Botanical Name

MALUS 'Jewelcole'(RED JEWEL™)

Plant Common Name

Crabapple, Flowering Crabapple, Red Jewel™ Crabapple

General Description

Showy from spring to fall, Red Jewel crabapple covers itself in flowers and cherry-like fruits. It’s a small, hybrid, disease-resistant, deciduous tree that has a pyramid shape and upward-reaching branches. In mid-spring, flower buds arise all along the bare branches and open to white flowers that are fragrant. Bees pollinate the flowers, producing heavy crops of small, shiny, fruits that mature to a dark red by early autumn and persist on the tree until spring. The leaves are oval and green and emerge after the flowers. The fall foliage is green mottled yellow, orange and orange-red. Birds eat the fruits and can strip the tree by the end of winter.

Plant 'Jewelcole' in full sun in any moderately fertile, deep, well-drained soil that is moist throughout the growing season. Like most crabapples, ‘Jewelcole’ tolerates some drought, but must be watered during prolonged dry spells or the leaves will wither and drop. It is not well-suited long, humid, wet summers or in the heat and airidity of low deserts. An extended cold period is needed each winter to ensure production of flowers in the springtime. Use this small tree in a small-sized landscape such as a courtyard or foundation bed, or in the rear of a mixed border, or as an upright-trained espalier. Only prune soon after flowering, before new flower buds begin to form.
