MALUS 'Pink Spires'

Family

Rosaceae

Botanical Name

MALUS 'Pink Spires'

Plant Common Name

Crabapple, Flowering Crabapple, Pink Spires Crabapple

General Description

An upright and narrow tree, 'Pink Spires' fills its branches with deep rose-pink buds and lighter rosy flowers in spring, then red-violet fruits in fall. This hybrid, disease-resistant deciduous tree has an erect, narrow shape with oval, bronze-green leaves that emerge reddened. In mid-spring, flower buds arise all along the bare branches and open before the leaves begin to grow. The flowers are fragrant and attract bees, then give way to a crop of pea-sized apples that mature to red-violet. In autumn, the leaves turn mottled green, yellow, orange and orange-red. Birds eat the fruits and can strip the tree by mid-winter.

Plant 'Pink Spires' in full sun in any moderately fertile, deep, well-drained soil that is moist throughout the growing season. Although it tolerates some drought, this tree will look stressed and even shabby unless watered during prolonged dry periods. It is not well-suited to long, humid, wet summers or the heat and aridity of low deserts. It needs a long period of cold in the winter to flower fully in spring. Use this narrow tree as a specimen in a lawn or courtyard, to line a street, as an erect espalier, or for a hedge.
