Bosh Bruening

Family

Apocynaceae

Botanical Name

MANDEVILLA laxa

Plant Common Name

Chilean-jasmine, Wen teng

General Description

Commonly called Chilean jasmine, this robust vine offers many medium-sized creamy white blooms that are fragrant and long-lasting. It is a tropical garden favorite that is native to Argentina and Chile where it exists in moist montane forests. This vine is shorter and more manageable than other Mandevilla.

White Mandevilla is evergreen and has gloss green leaves that are elliptical to oblong with pointed tips. The leathery foliage exudes milky sap when broken or wounded. The fabulous flowers are tubular to funnel-shaped with five broad, spreading petal lobes. They are white with narrow throats touched with yellow. The blooms are produced continuously as long as growing conditions are favorable.

These twining vines prefer full to part sun and moist, well-drained soil. They like warm temperatures and are frost sensitive. Where not hardy, they are best grown in containers that can be moved to a bright warm spot indoors to overwinter. They climb by twining stems and need support. Pergolas, trellises, or fences are best. Mandevilla are magnets for mealybugs and aphids, so check them often for infestations, particularly when grown indoors.
