Botanical Name
MANDEVILLA 'Red Velvet' PP12238
Plant Common Name
Mandevilla, Red Velvet Mandevilla
General Description
The rich magenta red, ruffled blooms of Mandevilla ‘Red Velvet’ provide vibrant summer color to sunny garden spots. This twining hybrid vine has shiny dark green lance-shaped leaves and bears many long-lasting, large blooms of magenta red with yellow throats. It has better heat and cold tolerance than other mandevillas and is fast growing. It was bred by John F. Gray of Hawthorne, Florida and was chosen as a seedling of a self-pollinated Mandevilla Janell™ (‘PSJAM LP1’).
Mandevilla are tropical favorites that originate from Central and South America. The woody vines are evergreen and have glossy green, opposite leaves that emit milky sap when broken. The fabulous flowers are funnel-shaped with five broad spreading petal lobes. They bloom all year around, if weather is warm and accommodating, and may occur singly or in clusters.
Plant Mandevilla in full to partial sun and moist, well-drained soil. They like warm temperatures and are frost sensitive. Where not hardy, they are best grown in containers that can be moved to a bright warm spot indoors to overwinter. They climb by twining stems, and need substantial support. Strong pergolas, trellises, or fences are best. Mandevilla are magnets for mealybugs and aphids, so check them often for infestations, particularly when grown indoors.
