Botanical Name
MANDEVILLA sanderi 'Little Red Riding Hood'
Plant Common Name
Little Red Riding Hood, Mandevilla
General Description
Originally from the hills above Rio de Janeiro, Mandevilla sanderi is not found in the wild anymore. However, it is a favorite of gardeners in warm climates. Little Red Riding Hood has fabulous, fragrant flowers that are larger that other mandevillas. They are bell-shaped and hot pink to red with yellow throats. The flowers occur in clusters of three to five in profusion during warm weather, scattered flowers appear throughout the year. The leaves are evergreen, glossy, medium sized, oblong to elliptic and dark green. The vine is twining.
Mandevilla vines need full to part sun and moist, well-drained soil. They like it warm and are frost sensitive; grow in containers in colder locations. Mandevillas need support to climb, so plant it near a pergola, trellis, or fence. Also nice in containers or hanging baskets. Mandevillas are magnets for mealybugs and aphids, check often for infestations, particularly when moving indoors.
