MANDEVILLA sanderi
Plant Common Name
Mandevilla
General Description
Originally from the hills above Rio de Janeiro, Mandevilla sanderi is not found in the wild anymore. However, it is a favorite of gardeners in warm climates. Mandevilla is an evergreen, woody, twining vine with glossy, medium sized, oblong to elliptic green leaves. The fabulous, fragrant flowers are large, bell-shaped and pink or white with white and yellow throats. They occur in clusters of three to five in profusion during warm weather, scattered flowers appear throughout the year. Many cultivars are available, including red-flowered, white-flowered, and variegated selections.
Mandevilla vines prefer full sun to part sun and moist, well-drained soil. They like it warm and are frost sensitive; grow in containers in colder locations. Mandevillas need support to climb, so plant it near a pergola, trellis, or fence. Also nice in containers or hanging baskets. Mandevillas are magnets for mealybugs and aphids, check often for infestations, particularly when moving indoors.
