Family

Apocynaceae

Botanical Name

MANDEVILLA splendens

Plant Common Name

Mandevilla, Pink Mandevilla, Shining Mandevilla

General Description

A Brazilian native, shining mandevilla is an evergreen, woody, twining vine with glossy green leaves and fuzzy young stems. New growth may be slightly bronze. Large rose-pink, funnel-form flowers with white and yellow throats occur in clusters of three to five during warm weather. Many cultivars are available, including red-flowered, white-flowered, and variegated selections.

The shining mandevilla undergoes best growth in full sun and moist, well-drained soil. It needs support to climb, so plant it near a pergola, trellis, or fence. Smaller cultivars work well in containers and hanging baskets.
