Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

MAURANTHEMUM paludosum

Plant Common Name

Annual Chrysanthemum, Annual Paludosum Daisy

General Description

Dainty daises top the mounded lacy foliage of this low, bushy, easy to grow annual. Native to Portugal, Spain and the Balearic Islands, it is sometimes called mini-Marguerite or mini-Shasta daisy.

Germinating 2 to 3 weeks after a shallow sowing, this cool-season annual puts forth a dense low-growing clump of green or gray-green, toothed, spoon-shaped leaves. In early summer, upright leafy stems are crowned with small white daisies with deep yellow centers. Each stem bears a single daisy.

Available as seed or as transplants, paludosum daisy flowers best in full sun and moderately rich well-drained soil. It prefers cooler temperatures and is grown as a fall, winter, or early spring annual in warmer regions. In some cool environments it may grow and flower for a couple of years. Somewhat drought tolerant, it grows and flowers best with regular applications of water. Deadheading will prolong flowering. Use Mauranthemum paludosum in sunny beds, borders and containers.
