Extensive Dutch breeding to increase flower size and color intensity while promoting a more compact habit has yielded the Bounty hybrid monkeyflowers. These are lovely large flowered tender perennial bedding plants typically grown in pots. The monkeyflower genus is composed of many species native to the west coast of North America. These perennial wildflowers, though finicky and often short lived in cultivation have proven quite garden worthy. Their primary parents are the Pacific Coast Mimulus guttatus and a Chilean native, Mimulus luteus. This small bushy plant bears soft oval, evenly green leaves and is often grown as an annual for the florist trade.
The Bounty Hybrids are lovely in the small garden with their large, flaring tubular flowers often compared to snapdragons. Their strong, plain colors include orange, red, rose and yellow, which are quite popular in Europe to warm up cool northern gardens as a bedding plant. The key to monkeyflowers is soil, which should be kept evenly moist yet very well drained. This is an exceptional container plant for instant color on a sunny porch, patio and balcony, but protect from direct afternoon exposure to prevent dehydration and burning.
