Miscanthus sinensis ssp. condensatus 'Cabaret'
Cabaret Silvergrass, Eulalia, Japanese Silvergrass
What a big, bold variegated wonder! Cabaret silvergrass originates from Japan and eastern Asia and has long, broad blades of dark green with strong ivory stripes down their centers. Late in the season, plants produce many tall, upright stems topped with feathery, copper-hued plumes that soften and curl as they dry. These remain attractive throughout winter.
Japanese silvergrass prefers full sun and tolerates a wide range of moderately drained soils. This variety is even tolerant of poorly drained soils. Plants form substantial clumps that should be cut to the ground in the spring and divided every three years. They also self sow and have been known to be somewhat invasive.
Enjoy this substantial grass as a screen or in large borders as an accent plant.
