Botanical Name

MISCANTHUS sinensis 'Yaku Jima'

Plant Common Name

Eulalia, Japanese Silvergrass, Yaku Jima Silvergrass

General Description

Yaku Jima silvergrass is a compact selection that was discovered in Japan on the island of Yaku. It has very dense arching foliage, which gives this grass a mounded appearance. Its medium green blades are long and thin and turn a golden wheat color in the autumn. In the late summer to fall plants produce many tall, upright stems topped with feathery, pink-hued silvery plumes that fluff up and curl as they dry. These remain attractive throughout winter.

Japanese silvergrass prefers full sun and tolerates a wide range of moderately drained soils. Plants form substantial clumps that should be cut to the ground in the spring and divided every three years. They also self sow and have been known to be somewhat invasive.

Enjoy 'Yaku Jima' as a screen or in large borders as an accent plant.
