Muhly Grass
Bringing a graceful, mounding mass of fine, blue-green foliage to the garden, blue muhly grass is a resilient and beautiful perennial. Native to the dry prairies and rocky hillsides of Texas and northern Mexico, it is semi-evergreen, becoming fully dried only in the coldest reaches of its hardiness range in winter. The long, fine leaf blades of blue muhly grass are grayish blue-green and form a tight clump, weeping downward at their tips. In early fall tall, lavender-blue stems rise high above the foliage and display tight, thin clusters of flowers that are ivory and then become silvery tan seedheads.
Grow blue muhly grass in full sun in any range of soil types, although well-draining fertile soil that is not too dry is ideal. It is tolerant of high summer heat and humidity, saltspray, and occasional light flooding. Use it as an accent plant in the mixed border, or en masse in roadside medians, ditches, or windswept hillsides. Cut back the old season foliage in early spring for a look of complete freshness when the new leaves arise.
