General Description

The Goldfinger banana is an upright, fast-growing, tropical herb (not a tree) with large, flat, green leaves. The long, pendent flowers give rise to large bunches of large fruits that range in color from pale green when young and more starchy in taste to golden yellow when ripe and sweetly tart. This dessert banana, 'FHIA-01', is a complex tetraploid hybrid developed by the FHIA breeders in Honduras in the 1980s. It has high resistance to Sigatoka leaf spot disease and two races of Panama disease. It also is more tolerant of drier soils and winter cold than most other bananas, particularly the Cavendish clones.

A tender perennial that is a semi-dwarf in banana standards, 'FHIA-01' forms a close clump of plants, each stem flowering and fruiting only once before dying. This hybrid is exceptional in that its fruits naturally transport well, ripen from green to yellow naturally once harvested, have a sweet but tarty flavor, and the flesh has minimal browning (oxidation) when exposed to air.

Banana plants love warm fertile soils with consistent moisture. Full sun exposures are best and a long growing season is required to set the flowering stalk and fruits. Avoid sandy poor soils for 'FHIA-01', although better adapted to drier conditions than others. This banana is root-hardy in warmer temperate zones and rejuvenate after spring frosts. The leaves though large are thin and shred easily in high winds, while the fruits do not drop readily. The exotic and tropical look of this banana, even without fruits, makes it a great large-sized specimen plant for the garden.
