Muscari armeniacum 'Dark Eyes'

Russell Stafford

Family

Liliaceae

Botanical Name

Muscari armeniacum 'Dark Eyes'

Plant Common Name

Armenian Grape Hyacinth

General Description

The deep sky-blue flowers of 'Dark Eyes' partner beautifully with small daffodils, pansies, and other spring-blooming perennials. This hardy bulbous perennial is also great for naturalizing and for adding a splash of cool color to spring containers. It is a selection of Armenian grape hyacinth, which occurs from southeastern Europe to the Caucasus.

Reminiscent of bunches of grapes, the erect, conical clusters of small, urn-shaped blooms appear in early to mid-spring on leafless ankle-high stems. As the flowers mature their rims turn white. The fragrant blossoms attract bees. The grassy green leaves wither in late spring and reappear in fall.

Grape hyacinths prefer sun or light shade and well-drained but fertile soil. They look best planted in masses among other spring bulbs. Though they are small, they can be cut and look sweet clustered into tiny vases. They are also ideal for winter forcing.
