Muscari aucheri
Grape Hyacinth
In mid-spring this native of Turkey bears pretty conical grape-like clusters of tiny rounded blue flowers with white edges. These are sweetly fragrant and rise from neat clusters of grassy green foliage. The grassy leaves disappear in summer, reappear in fall and persist until plants flower again in spring.
Grape hyacinths grow best in full to partial sun and well-drained but fertile soil. They look best planted in rock gardens or in masses among other spring bulbs, such as small daffodils and species tulips. Though they are small, they can be cut and look sweet clustered in tiny vases.
There are many fine cultivars of Muscari aucheri to include royal blue and pale blue-flowered ‘Mount Hood’ and brilliant blue ‘Magic Blue.’
