Woodland Forget-Me-Not
Often short-lived, woodland forget-me-not is an herbaceous perennial of European origin. In spring plants form small clumps of small hairy gray-green leaves from which rise branched flower stems with curled flower spikes (helicoid cymes) dotted with tiny, tubular five-petaled flowers with white and yellow centers. These fairyland flowers have an airy, ephemeral appearance and can bloom from spring to summer.
There are many cultivars, differing in size and flower color, including white, pink, rose and carmine-flowered varieties. Some cultivars, such as 'Blue Ball' and 'White Ball' are half the size of the species, a useful feature in small beds.
To keep the plants healthy and happy, grow them in full sun with midday shade, or partial sun and provide them with in moist, rich soil with average drainage. Forget-me-nots replace themselves by freely self-sowing, though seeded plants may require thinning. Plant them in a woodland gardens, mixed border or as bedding flowers for spring. They look wonderful planted among late-flowering spring bulbs and overall are not favored by deer.
