Narcissus 'Ariel'
Tazetta Daffodil
Cold-tender perennial bulbs that light up (and perfume) the darkest days of the year, paperwhite narcissus have long been favorites for winter decoration. A recently introduced hybrid paperwhite, 'Ariel' opens its intensely fragrant white blooms in late fall or winter, somewhat earlier than those of 'Ziva.' Arrayed in clusters atop knee-high stems, the small, downfacing flowers have six oval "petals" and a small ribbed central cup. The long strap-shaped leaves emerge with the flowers. This plant is most often grown in containers for indoor display.
Where hardy, plant this sun-loving perennial in full sun and well drained soil at a depth of 2 to 3 times the bulb's height. For indoor container growing, plant bulbs densely (but not touching) in a moist well-drained medium and place the container in cool bright indirect light. Move it to a cool sunny site when flower buds emerge. Bulbs will bloom several weeks after planting. They can also be grown in water: arrange the bulbs at the base of a tall straight-sided glass vase and add enough water to immerse their bases. Add water occasionally to maintain it at the same level.
