Narcissus 'Ziva'
Tazetta Daffodil, Ziva Paperwhite
Cold-tender perennial bulbs that light up (and perfume) the darkest days of the year, paperwhite narcissus have long been favorites for winter decoration. The cultivar 'Ziva' is noted for its relatively large, rounded, creamy white flowers on stout stems.
Arrayed in domed clusters of 10 to 18 atop stems of nearly knee height, the golfball-size flowers have six oval "petals" and a short wavy-edged central cup. The long strap-shaped leaves emerge with the flowers. This plant is most often grown in containers for indoor display, but makes a good garden plant in regions with mild winters.
Where hardy, plant this sun-loving perennial in full sun and well drained soil at a depth of 2 to 3 times the bulb's height. For indoor container growing, plant bulbs densely (but not touching) in a moist well-drained medium and place the container in cool bright indirect light. Move it to a cool sunny site when flower buds emerge. Bulbs will bloom several weeks after planting. They can also be grown in water: arrange the bulbs at the base of a tall straight-sided glass vase and add enough water to immerse their bases. Add water occasionally to maintain its level.
