General Description

Plump rosettes of glossy, smooth leaves that turn vibrant coral-magenta make the Magali hybrid bromeliad a showstopper. This semi-epiphytic perennial was the result of controlled hybridization efforts by Grant Groves of Orlando, Florida. Parent plants were cultivar 'Lila' and Neoregelia carolinae 'Meyendorfii'. Bright, humid and warm conditions favor good growth of 'Magali'. New plantlets arise on stolons from the main "mother" plant and replace it as it slowly dies after blooming.

The small rosette of this bromeliad comprises a radial bouquet of concave, sword-like leaves without spines. In the center of the rosette is a water-holding cup. In spring or early summer, mature Magali bromeliads form pincushion-like flower structures in the center which are partially submerged with water in the rosette cup. Tiny white to lavender blossoms reach just above the water line. Summer heat and very bright indirect lights intensify the red pigmentation of the leaves.

Grow 'Magali' in a sandy or gritty soil supplemented with sphagnum moss. It can also be mounted onto a tree branch or grown in a container filled with bark nuggets or coarse compost. Keep leaf bases filled with water, especially if plants are exposed to direct sun rays. Specimens look best placed in partial sun or very bright indirect light beneath tall trees with high humidity. Avoid exposure to freezing temperatures. It makes a nice low clumping edging or accent in the tropical border or as a massed groundcover.
