General Description

A sterile selection of the classic Boston swordfern, ‘Fluffy Ruffles’ is a compact, elegant fern with spreading and arching, shiny fronds lined with wavy-edged and incised leaflets. Easy to grow and tolerant or summer warmth and humidity, its parent species is an evergreen to semi-evergreen fern native to the tropical Americas, Africa and Polynesia. The fronds of ‘Fluffy Ruffles' are medium green to slightly yellowed, shorter and more arching than those of the parent species, all helping to make its habit more compact. This fern does not make spores and only reproduces by creating new rhizomes (underground stems) and stolons (ground-laying horizontal stems). It requires infrequent division and replanting for renewed vigor, particularly if container-grown.

Fluffy Ruffles Boston swordfern grows best in full to partial shade and organic-rich, well-draining soil with regular moisture. Frosts and mild subfreezing temperatures kill foliage down, making it act like an herbaceous perennial. In frost-free regions it may be planted in mixed borders or foundation plantings as a specimen or sweeping groundcover. In temperate climates, plants in containers may be kept outdoors during the growing season and brought indoors to overwinter.
