NERIUM oleander 'Turner's Shari D'(SHARI D™) PP5378
Plant Common Name
Oleander, Shari D™ Oleander
General Description
Oleander is a Mediterranean shrub that thrives where summers are dry and hot. It is a large, vase-shaped evergreen with leathery lance-shaped leaves and colorful flowers, which appear all year—most heavily from late winter to early summer. The showy, single, flowers have a funnel-shaped base from which flare five prominent radial petals. Blooms are carried in loose clusters at the ends of the branches. The cultivar ‘Shari D’ is a compact, dwarf plant with dark green foliage and a multitude of dense flower heads. The unusual blooms are butter-yellow with a burgundy striped dark yellow throat.
Plant these tough shrubs in full sun and well draining soil. Oleanders are very drought tolerant but appreciate moist soil and develop a better floral display, as well as overall form, if given good growing conditions. Often grown as a hedge, frequent shearing reduces flower production, so prune by hand to retain a healthy, natural shape. This is an excellent plant for difficult areas. It may be used as a container plant, large shrub, in mixed plantings or for screening.
There are potential health concerns with this plant. For more information about the toxicity of oleander see http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/consumer/poison/Neriuol.htm.
