General Description

This is a subspecies of a primrose native to the southcentral United States that blooms with large bright yellow flowers. Unlike many evening primroses, Fremont's evening primrose has flowers that are open all day and flowering runs from spring to fall, followed by large, winged seedpods. It is a clumping perennial with a central rootstock from which emerge lax trailing reddish stems. The stems are hairy, the leaves lance-shaped and toothed. It also does not spread aggressively. It is native on open glades and well-drained soils from Missouri and Kansas to Texas.

Fremont's evening primrose grows and flowers best on well-drained average soil. In hot climates, it benefits from midday shade. It shines in perennial beds and borders, especially in the foreground or in meadows and rock gardens on hillsides.
