Origanum 'Kent Beauty'
Hybrid Round-leaved Oregano
This truly magnificent perennial cousin of culinary oregano, ‘Kent Beauty,’ is an exceptional container plant when grown all by itself. It is the result of crossing Oregano rotundifolium of Turkey and Armenia with the little known Oregano scabrum. This bushy, trailing perennial produces wiry stems bearing small, oval, blue-green leaves that are quite attractive in their own right. Though not particularly aromatic, they retain some oregano fragrance.
Prized for its bloom, ‘Kent Beauty’ flowers from summer to fall. Its flowers resemble those of hops, dense bundles or whorls of pink bracts (petal-like leaves) that, together with the true leaves, offer a gorgeous effect. Both leaves and flowers are pendulous when grown in pots, dangling over the edge with soft color and interesting form. This plant asks for very well-drained soil kept on the dry side with occasional deep watering. It thrives in full sun but may require afternoon shade in inland heat or in dry climates. The blossoms hold their form and color when cut and dried for crafts and arrangements. Consider this a first-class candidate for pots, window boxes and hanging baskets.
