Family
Oleaceae
Botanical Name
Osmanthus x burkwoodii
Plant Common Name
Burkwood Osmanthus
General Description
This medium-sized, rounded, evergreen shrub is the hybrid between the West Asian native Osmanthus decorus and the East Asian O. delavayi.
The glossy, dark green, oval leaves of this dense, slow-growing shrub are paired along upright to spreading stems. The leaves are leathery and weakly toothed. Small, white, intensely fragrant blooms appear in the leaf axils in spring. Most plants do not fruit.
This shrub thrives in full to partial sun and moist, well-drained soil. It tolerates considerable cold, wintering successfully into USDA Hardiness Zone 7. Well suited for hedges, foundation plantings, and mixed borders, it also works well in a bright, cool position indoors.
