PAEONIA lactiflora 'Mother's Choice'
This double-flowered peony bears immense, perfectly formed, snowy blooms on strong medium-tall stems in late spring, midway through the peony season. It is one of hundreds of cultivars of Paeonia lactiflora, a large, bushy, tuberous perennial from East Asia that has been cultivated and treasured for thousands of years.
The fragrant blooms of this American Peony Society Gold Medal winner have numerous pure white petals and petal-like "staminodes" arranged in classic "pompon" fashion. The flowers may be tinged or tipped with pink. Bees, ants, and the occasional butterfly visit the blooms. This strong-stemmed, relatively flop-resistant peony has large, rich green, divided leaves that often turn bronze tones in fall.
Peonies grow best in full to partial sun and well-drained, fertile soil. These old-fashioned perennials are very long-lived and have been known to survive in gardens for over 100 years. Use them in foundation plantings or any floral border. They make voluptuous cut flowers. Although more flop resistant than most double-flowered peonies, 'Mother's Choice' may need staking.
Divide plants every 3 or 4 years in early autumn or as shoots break ground in spring. Plant divisions at a finger's-width depth; plants set too deep will not flower.
