Family

Paeoniaceae

Botanical Name

PAEONIA lactiflora 'Raspberry Sundae'

Plant Common Name

Herbaceous Peony

General Description

This double-flowered peony bears large, cream and pale-pink, "bomb-type" blossoms on flop-prone, medium-tall stems in late spring, midway through the peony season. It is one of hundreds of cultivars of Paeonia lactiflora, a large, bushy, tuberous perennial from East Asia that has been cultivated and treasured for thousands of years.

The fragrant blooms of this 1968 introduction have several large, pinkish-white outer petals cupping a creamy-yellow, ball-shaped crest of petal-like "staminodes." The crest shades to pink at its tip. The flowers turn pinker with age. Bees, ants, and the occasional butterfly visit the blooms. The bold, dark green, divided leaves may turn bronze tones in fall.

Peonies grow best in full to partial sun and well-drained, fertile soil. These old-fashioned perennials are very long-lived and have been known to survive in gardens for over 100 years. Use them in foundation plantings or any floral border. They make voluptuous cut flowers. The large flowers of 'Raspberry Sundae' may cause its stems to topple, so staking is advised.

Divide plants every 3 or 4 years in early autumn or as shoots break ground in spring. Plant divisions at a finger's-width depth; plants set too deep will not flower.
