General Description

Papaver orientale, commonly called oriental poppy, is a clump-forming perennial native to eastern Europe and western Asia that blooms profusely in early summer. Magnificent single, orange-red blooms with black blotches dance above the finely divided, hairy leaves in the species, but many different cultivars offer colors ranging from almost white through oranges, reds, and shades of purple. They can grow 18 to 36 inches tall and 24 inches wide. Foliage dies back after bloom and regrows in the fall. Several plants massed together create a stunning display.
