Family

Papaveraceae

Botanical Name

PAPAVER orientale 'Scarlett O'Hara' PP17333

Plant Common Name

Oriental Poppy, Scarlett O'Hara Oriental Poppy

General Description

The scarlet-orange blooms of 'Scarlett O’Hara' are exceptionally large and pretty. They appear in late spring to early summer atop vigorous compact plants and bloom longer than average Oriental poppies. This patented cultivar was bred by Gerardus Oudshoorn in The Netherlands and introduced by Future Plants Licentie.

This clump-forming perennial produces hairy green deeply toothed leaves in spring. In late spring to early summer it offers leafless stems topped with bulbous buds surrounded by two green protective sepals. When the buds open the sepals fall away to make way for glorious bowl-shaped flowers. The ruffled flowers of 'Scarlett O’Hara' are scarlet-orange and have a black blotch at the base of each petal. The fruit is a capped dry capsule called a pyxis.

Provide these plants with full to partial sun and well-drained average soil. In the garden 'Scarlett O’Hara' looks super in any showy perennial border with sun. Oriental poppies are old-fashioned garden plants that also look great in cottage gardens or around old homes.
