General Description

An abundance of coral-pink and salmon flower clusters appear on stems above the leaves on the Abigail zonal geranium when temperatures are warm. The rounded, coarse-feeling leaves are lush green but with a circular, "zonal" rusty bronze band in their middles. Butterflies visit the flowers, which continue up until frosts or oppressive humidity and rains halts growth. Stems become stiff and beige over time, with succulent, water-conserving tissues inside.

Vigorous and easy-to-grow, this fancy-leaved zonal geranium needs full to part sun and average to fertile soil that drains well. Alkaline soils need to be amended with lots of organic matter first. Most hybrids, like 'Abigail', are everblooming and appreciate regular deadheading. Enjoy this fine bedding plant in sunny mixed beds and borders, containers or hanging baskets. In temperate climates this geranium can be brought indoors to overwinter. In frost-free landscapes it will become a semi-woody shrub that may be pruned back to make cuttings or to rejuvenate as a bushier plant with more flowers.
