Family
Geraniaceae
Botanical Name
Pelargonium( AMERICANA™ SERIES)
Plant Common Name
Americana™ Geranium
General Description
Big, beautiful, intensely colored flower clusters are the crowning glory of the Americana™ Series of zonal geraniums. These beauties have robust, upright, well-branched habits as well as pretty scalloped leaves in addition to its huge clusters of semi-double flowers that come in fourteen different colors. Plants will bloom continuously if well-maintained and can tolerate oppressive summertime heat better than the typical zonal geranium. The hybrid Americana™ Series was introduced by Goldsmith Seeds.
These tender perennials have fragrant, somewhat fleshy evergreen leaves that are lobed and crisp medium green, sometimes with colorful patterns. Their showy flowers are semi-double and borne in big terminal clusters. Flower colors include red, white, pink, orange, purple and salmon shades.
Vigorous and easy to grow, zonal geraniums prefer full to partial sun and average to fertile soil that drains well. Overwatering can result in root or crown rot. Most hybrids are everblooming and require regular deadheading for best appearance and flower production. They can be planted in mixed beds and borders, containers or hanging baskets.
Zonal geraniums will rot and deteriorate in the humidity and rains of sub-tropical to tropical rainy seasons. It’s better to grow them in areas where growing temperatures mild and conditions drier.
