General Description

The Apache Series of zonal geraniums are known for their slightly increasing summer heat tolerance, excellent ability to branch from their bases and a wide array of flower colors. Plants are rather early in producing their first flowers, too. These beauties have robust, mounded but very compact habits as well as pretty scalloped leaves. At least 10 different flower colors, from white to shades of red to violet-pink, exist among its cultivars. Plants will bloom continuously if well-maintained and can tolerate oppressive summertime heat better than the typical zonal geranium. However, it the hottest climates, afternoon shade is recommended.

These tender perennials have fragrant, somewhat fleshy evergreen leaves that are lobed and crisp medium green with a brown-bronze band or "zone". Their showy flowers are borne in big terminal clusters. Flower colors include white, bumblegum pink, coral-salmon, royal red, violet-red, lavender-fuchsia, magenta, scarlet and white with rose-pink center. Propagation is with stem cuttings, not by seed.

Vigorous and easy to grow, zonal geraniums prefer full to partial sun and average to fertile soil that drains well. Overwatering can result in root or crown rot. Most hybrids are everblooming and require regular deadheading for best appearance and flower production. They can be planted in mixed beds and borders, containers or hanging baskets.

Zonal geraniums will rot and deteriorate in the humidity and wetness of sub-tropical and tropical rainy seasons. It’s better to grow them when growing temperatures remain warm with comfortably cool night and lower humidity. Light frost may be briefly tolerated, but prolonged subfreezing temperatures kill plants.
