General Description

Star-shaped blossoms in loose upright clusters describes the excitement produced by the Fireworks Series of zonal geranium. With three flower color selections (red, pink or cherry), all are bicolored with white petal bases. Boasting a robust, spreading but well-branching habit and bright green lobed leaves with blackish or maroon-green bands, it blooms continuously if well-maintained. These hybrids are part of the Proven Winners collection.

Widely grown as a summertime annual, Fireworks Series plants are tender perennials with fragrant, somewhat fleshy evergreen leaves that are rounded with few, rounded lobes, making each blade look like a hand-held fan or clam shell. There is a zonal band of blackened green on each leaf, too. The bicolored flowers are borne in loose terminal clusters above the mass of leaves, attracting butterflies or hummingbirds. Each blossom has five pointy petals, resembling stars; clusters of the flowers over an entire plant look like collections of exploding pyrotechnics.

Vigorous and easy to grow, Fireworks Series zonal geraniums grow best in full to partial sun and average to fertile soil that drains well. Overwatering can result in root or crown rot. These hybrids are everblooming and require regular deadheading for best appearance and flower production. They can be planted in the foreground of mixed beds and borders, containers or as edging rows. Although frost-tender, they will rot and deteriorate in the humidity and rains in the tropical rainy season, therefore in such regions grow them in the winter dry season.
