General Description

Profusely bearing large flower clusters and having improved oppressive summer heat and humidity tolerances, the Horizon Series of zonal geraniums are known for blooming earlier in spring and later into autumn when grown as annuals. Boasting a compact, well-branching habit and bright green lobed leaves with blackish or maroon-green bands, it blooms continuously if well-maintained. These hybrids are highly regarded for their improved tolerance to intense summer heat, humidity and repeated thunderstorm rains.

Popularly used as summertime annuals, Horizon Series plants are tender perennials with fragrant, somewhat fleshy evergreen leaves that are rounded with small irregularly scalloped edges. There may be zonal bands of blackened green or bronze-maroon on each leaf, too. The flowers are borne in ball-like terminal clusters above the mass of leaves, attracting butterflies. Each blossom has five petals, and this series' colors include unique shades of white, pink, orange and bicolor cultivars.

Vigorous and easy-to-grow, Horizon Series zonal geraniums grow best in full to partial sun and average to fertile soil that drains well. Overwatering can result in root or crown rot. These hybrids are everblooming and require regular deadheading for best appearance and flower production. They can be planted in the foreground of mixed beds and borders, window boxes and containers or as edging rows. Although frost-tender, Horizon Series plants are better suited to the humidity and rains in the tropical rainy season, however they will eventually succumb to such extreme conditions. Therefore in such regions still grow them in the winter dry season.
