Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Piglet' PPAF
Chinese Fountaingrass, Fountaingrass, Piglet Fountaingrass
Popular and tough, fountaingrass is an attractive perennial that makes a great addition to sunny borders. This East Asian native forms neat clumped mounds of graceful pale to medium green arching blades. From summer to fall, large feathery spikes of flowers arise from thin arching stems. These soft spikes may be cream, tan or rose-hued. The leaves and flowers of fountaingrass turn golden brown in autumn and persist through winter, but should be cut back in spring. Selection 'Piglet' is medium sized and produces tawny plumes.
Fountaingrass grows best in full sun and average, well drained soil. It looks best when planted in masses and mixes well with Monarda, fall blooming composites and late blooming salvias. Piglet is nice as a groundcover and in contaners. The long-lived flower plumes of fountaingrass make wonderful additions to fresh or dry arrangements.
